One of the very popular and largest social networking sites in the world, Facebook has around 1.2 billion users, and is used in most of the countries in the world except China. Yes, you read it right, China has banned Facebook, and not only Facebook but also other popular social networking site such as Twitter, Gmail, Youtube etc. However, in this article I will be explaining you only on why Facebook is banned in China?
In China, the government controls the overall content being published in the internet. So, if they deem the content violates, is against or damages the state status, then China either deletes, restricts or bans it. China’s director of state internet information office, Lu Wei said that foreign internet companies must be at the base level and strictly adhere to the China laws and regulations. A company shouldn’t damage the national interests of the county, and hurt the benefits of the consumers. He further adds, if any company willing to initiate business in China then they should respect China’s law and regulation, and can operate any companies in the Chinese market.
Actually, Facebook has been blocked in China since 2009, and it is said that the main reason why China blocked is due the Ürümqi riots in July 2009 where Xinjiang independence activists were using Facebook as part of their communications network. It was said activist used Facebsook to conduct a protest. Likewise, another reason for Facebook being banned was believed due to Google China’s problems. Since, Google was already banned is China, the belief was that the existence of Facebook would also not succeed in China. The Facebook banned was pretty obvious since Facebook was completely opposed or didn’t comply with what China’s laws, and regulation. As director Wei mentioned, Chinese government indeed wants to control content, whether it’s a user generated or company generated, on the Internet. So, whatever happened during the riots, Facebook was also partly associated with it, so the only way China could stop was by banning it.
As said earlier, it’s not only Facebook that is banned in China, there are many other popular website around the world that China has banned. Recently, China also banned the New York time, one of the popular American daily newspaper, and Bloomberg news. Despite of Facebook being banned in China, its founder Mark Zuckerberg has been making several visits in China even delivered half an hour long speech in Mandarin with the hope to get Facebook back in China. However, it still has halted Facebook.
